These are implied to be the main influences on the game itself, except… those are all really good movies. The glorious soundtrack, from Australian duo Power Glove, is one half original and the other half a lawyer-worrying exact riff on music from The Terminator, RoboCop, Predator, Blade Runner, and The Thing. The opening tutorial section is fairly amusing, and there’s a good gag later at Assassin’s Creed’s expense, but there are very few specific video game references. Its main problem is it’s not really sure whether it’s a satire or a homage, or exactly what it’s supposed to be poking fun at. There are some good jokes in Blood Dragon – we love the idea of throwing a D20 dice to distract guards – but the script is not nearly as sharp as it thinks it is. To be honest the finer plot details are a bit hazy, especially as most of them are covered by overlong 2D cut scenes that look straight out of a SNES game. He’s set to the nameless island to deal with his ex-commanding officer, who’s gone rouge and is planning to turn the world into mutants by showering them with weaponised dragon’s blood… or something. You play as Sergeant Rex Power Colt (voiced by a bewildered-sounding Michael ‘Hicks’ Biehn), a Mark IV cyborg and veteran of Vietnam War II. Set in the ‘future’ of 2007, the game’s setting is a hodgepodge of Saturday morning cartoon scripts, bad comic books, and the prepubescent fantasies of a generation that grew up thinking mullets are cool.
